Unified Theory of Concrete Structures

Thomas T. C. Hsu, Y. L Mo, "Unified Theory of Concrete Structures"
Wiley | 2010 | ISBN: 0470688742 | 518 pages | PDF | 7,6 MB
Unified Theory of Concrete Structures develops an integrated theory that encompasses the various stress states experienced by both RC & PC structures under the various loading conditions of bending, axial load, shear and torsion. Upon synthesis, the new rational theories replace the many empirical formulas currently in use for shear, torsion and membrane stress.

The unified theory is divided into six model components: a) the struts-and-ties model, b) the equilibrium (plasticity) truss model, c) the Bernoulli compatibility truss model, d) the Mohr compatibility truss model, e) the softened truss model, and f) the softened membrane model. Hsu presents the six models as rational tools for the solution of the four basic types of stress, focusing on the significance of their intrinsic consistencies and their inter-relationships. Because of its inherent rationality, this unified theory of reinforced concrete can serve as the basis for the formulation of a universal and international design code.

* Includes an appendix and accompanying website hosting the authors’ finite element program SCS along with instructions and examples
* Offers comprehensive coverage of content ranging from fundamentals of flexure, shear and torsion all the way to non-linear finite element analysis and design of wall-type structures under earthquake loading.
* Authored by world-leading experts on torsion and shear

Reinforced Concrete Design of Tall Buildings

Bungale S. Taranath, "Reinforced Concrete Design of Tall Buildings"
CRC Press | 2009 | ISBN: 143980480X | 1024 pages | PDF | 31,5 MB
An exploration of the world of concrete as it applies to the construction of buildings, Reinforced Concrete Design of Tall Buildings provides a practical perspective on all aspects of reinforced concrete used in the design of structures, with particular focus on tall and ultra-tall buildings. Written by Dr. Bungale S. Taranath, this work explains the fundamental principles and state-of-the-art technologies required to build vertical structures as sound as they are eloquent. Dozens of cases studies of tall buildings throughout the world, many designed by Dr. Taranath, provide in-depth insight on why and how specific structural system choices are made.

The book bridges the gap between two approaches: one based on intuitive skills and experience and the other based on computer skills and analytical techniques. Examining the results when experiential intuition marries unfathomable precision, this book discusses:

The latest building codes, including ASCE/SEI 7-05, IBC-06/09, ACI 318-05/08, and ASCE/SEI 41-06 Recent developments in studies of seismic vulnerability and retrofit design Earthquake hazard mitigation technology, including seismic base isolation, passive energy dissipation, and damping systems Lateral bracing concepts and gravity-resisting systems Performance based design trends Dynamic response spectrum and equivalent lateral load procedures

Using realistic examples throughout, Dr. Taranath shows how to create sound, cost-efficient high rise structures. His lucid and thorough explanations provide the tools required to derive systems that gracefully resist the battering forces of nature while addressing the specific needs of building owners, developers, and architects. The book is packed with broad-ranging material from fundamental principles to the state-of-the-art technologies and includes techniques thoroughly developed to be highly adaptable. Offering complete guidance, instructive examples, and color illustrations, the author develops several approaches for designing tall buildings. He demonstrates the benefits of blending imaginative problem solving and rational analysis for creating better structural systems.

Product Description
This text is concerned with the preliminary stages of the design of structures for buildings. It also deals with the issues involved in structural decision making at a strategic level. It is intended principally for use by students of architecture and should provide them with the information required to make sensible choices on the structural aspects of architectural design. The topics covered include choice of structural material, the determination of the form and geometry of structures, the integration of the structure with other aspects of architectural design and the preliminary allocation of dimensions to the principal structural elements.

Design of Modern Highrise Reinforced Concrete Structures

Hiroyuki Aoyama, "Design of Modern Highrise Reinforced Concrete Structures"
World Scientific Publishing Company | 2002 | ISBN: 1860942393 | 300 pages |

This book presents the results of a Japanese national research project carried out in 1988-1993, usually referred to as the New RC Project. Developing advanced reinforced concrete building structures with high strength and high quality materials under its auspices, the project aimed at promoting construction of highrise reinforced concrete buildings in highly seismic areas such as Japan. The project covered all the aspects of reinforced concrete structures, namely materials, structural elements, structural design, construction, and feasibility studies. In addition to presenting these results, the book includes two chapters giving an elementary explanation of modern analytical techniques, i.e. finite element analysis and earthquake response analysis.

Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation

Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation: Proceedings of the conference held at the Kingston University, United Kingdom, 9 - 10 September 2008
By Mukesh C Limbachiya, Hsein Y. Kew
Publisher: Taylor & Francis | 594 pages | 2008-09-03 | ISBN: 0415475929 | English |

Product Description:

The concrete industry has embraced innovation and ensured high levels of long-term performance and sustainability through creative applications in design and construction. As a construction material, the versatility of concrete and its intrinsic benefits mean it is still well placed to meet challenges of the construction industry. Indeed, concrete has kept evolving to satisfy ever more stringent, as well as demanding design requirements and calls to improve the performance. This has been achieved through the introduction of new constituent materials, technologies and construction methods.

The current challenges faced by concrete construction may not necessarily be the same as those in the future. However, an ongoing programme of innovation and product development means that concrete should continue to provide cost effective sustainable solutions that are able to turn a challenge into an opportunity.

This book is a collection of papers presented at the International Conference on Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation (Kingston-upon-Thames, UK, 9–10 September 2008). Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation deals with recent innovation in concrete science, technology and practice, and discusses challenges from new materials, technologies,
environmental concerns and economic factors in maintaining concrete construction excellence. The book will be of interest to engineers, designers, researchers and scientists.

Seismic Design of Buildings to Eurocode 8

Ahmed Elghazouli, "Seismic Design of Buildings to Eurocode 8"
Taylor & Francis | 2009-06-17 | ISBN: 0415447623, 0203888944 | 320 pages | PDF | 10,5 MB
As the new Eurocode 8 on the Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance has acquired the status of a full Euronorm, practical information and training has become urgently needed, especially in relation to the underlying principles of seismic behaviour and the design of building structures. This book covers seismic design in a clear but brief manner and links the principles to the code, illustrated with design examples. Concrete and steel buildings, and their foundations, are given special emphasis but the book is also applicable to many other types of structure and sub-structure.The book stems from practical short courses on seismic design, run jointly by the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) and Imperial College London. Its contributors are either senior academics with significant consulting experience, or leading practitioners, which gives the book a strong industry emphasis. It will be of value to a wide range of practising civil and structural engineers at different stages of their careers; and should also be of direct use to academics preparing courses and worked examples on seismic design to EC8, to advanced undergraduate students, and to Masters level students in Earthquake, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering.
