Industrial Machinery Repair: Best Maintenance Practices Pocket Guide (Plant Engineering) by Ricky Smith ,R. Keith Mobley President and CEO of Integrated Systems Inc

Industrial Machinery Repair: Best Maintenance Practices Pocket Guide (Plant Engineering)  by Ricky Smith ,R. Keith Mobley President and CEO of Integrated Systems Inc
This book addresses, in a simplistic manner, the proper principles and
techniques in “Best Maintenance Practices—Mechanical.”
If these principles and techniques are followed, they will result in a serious
reduction in “self-induced failures.” This book is a tool that should be carried
and referenced by all mechanical maintenance personnel.
A number of surveys conducted in industries throughout the United States
have found that 70% of equipment failures are self-induced.
Maintenance personnel who are not following what are termed “Best
Maintenance Repair Practices” substantially affect these failures. Between
30% and 50% of the self-induced failures are the result of maintenance
personnel not knowing the basics of maintenance. Maintenance personnel
who, although skilled, choose not to follow best maintenance repair practices
potentially cause another 20% to 30% of those failures. The existence
of this problem has been further validated through the skills assessment
process performed in companies throughout the state of Georgia. This program
evaluated the knowledge of basic maintenance fundamentals through
a combination of written, identification, and performance assessments of
thousands of maintenance personnel from a wide variety of industries.
The results indicated that over 90% lacked complete basic fundamentals
of mechanical maintenance. This book focuses on the “Best Maintenance
Repair Practices” necessary for maintenance personnel to keep equipment
operating at peak reliability and companies functioning more profitably
through reduced maintenance costs and increased productivity and
capacity.

Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them

Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them

Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them
Publisher: CRC | Pages: 248 | 2000-09-28 | ISBN 157444297X | PDF | 5 MB

There are some very good books available that explain the Lean Manufacturing theory and touch on implementing its
techniques. However, you cannot learn "how to be" lean from merely reading the theory. And to be successful in the real-work environment you need a clear comprehension of how lean techniques work, rather than just a remote understanding of what they are. You need to know what does and does not work in different situations. And you need the benefit of practical experience in their implementation. Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them gives you the benefit of author and practitioner William Feld's 15 years of hands-on experience - and the lessons he's learned. Feld provides insight into the appropriate use of assessment, analysis, design, and, most importantly, deployment of a successful lean manufacturing program. Packed with practical advice and tips but not bogged down in theory, this book covers how, why, when, and what to do while implementing lean manufacturing. It equips you with the tools and techniques you need along with an understanding of how and why they work. Feld explores why an integrated approach is so much more beneficial in securing sustained improvement. He focuses on the interdependency of the Five Primary Elements: organization, metrics, logistics, manufacturing flow, and process control. He describes a proven, applied approach to creating a lean program using these elements. To keep up globally, and even locally, your manufacturing operation must be responsive, flexible, predictable, and consistent. You must continually improve manufacturing operations and cultivate a self directed work force driven by output based, customer performance criteria. By applying what you learn from Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them you can build a workforce - and an organization - with the capacity to satisfy world class expectations now and into the future.

Summary: Too simple
Rating: 4

I've generally found AMACOM books to be very good. This is a good book, just very simple, as I suspect are all of the books in the WorkSmart series (I've read 3). You can read this completely in one evening.
If you've never heard of TQM, this book will have some value to you. If you've read anything on TQM, you have probably covered most of what's in this book. A good "second" book, that you can read in place of this or following, is "Principles and Practices of Organizational Performance Excellence", by Thomas Cartin, an excellent book.

Summary: TQM made simple!!
Rating: 5

Dr. Williams' approach to the concepts of TQM are easy to understand and simple to follow. I couldn't put the book down. I've passed out many copies to business associates and friends. This book should be on EVERY executives desk!!

Cathodic Protection

Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is a system utilized to inhibit corrosion of structures, such as underground pipes, tanks, etc. Corrosion is an electrochemical process in which a current leaves a structure at the anode site, passes through an electrolyte, and reenters the structure at the cathode site. For example, because it is in a soil with low resistivity compared to the rest of the line, current would leave the pipeline at that anode site, pass through the soil, and reenter the pipeline at a cathode site. Current flows because of a potential difference between the anode and cathode. The anode potential is more negative than the cathode potential, and this difference is the driving force for the corrosion current. The total system – anode, cathode, electrolyte, and metallic connection between anode and cathode is termed a corrosion cell. For corrosion to occur, the following conditions are required.
