2G N.20 - Portuguese Architecture

2G N.20 - Portuguese Architecture.

OUT OF PRINT
Portuguese architecture, and its place on the international scene, has been receiving a lot of attention in the specialised press for some time now. The work of such great Portuguese architects as Fernando Távora, Álvaro Siza and Gonçalo Byrne has formed generations of internationally known figures, figures like Eduardo Souto de Moura, Adalberto Dias, Carrilho de Graça and Álvaro Rocha.
The aim of this issue of 2G is to present the architectures of a generation of architects whose work opens up new perspectives on Portuguese architecture, despite the latter being usually submitted to the scrutiny of the masters. Young architects who would form a more or less homogeneous "third generation", one caught between its ongoing marginality in geographical terms and an attentiveness to what is happening on the international scene.

2G N.26 Mathias Klotz
Stan Allen, Horacio Torrent (textos)

Mathias Klotz (Viña del Mar, Chile, 1965) is the most international figure among the new generation of Chilean architects. His work has been published in specialised magazines the world over, especially since receiving the 2001 Borromini Prize for the best architect under forty for his well-known Altamira School in Santiago de Chile. Despite working in and from the peripheral situation of Chile, from a position that for the Western world is almost exotic, his oeuvre alludes more to the second generation of Modern Movement architects, particularly the work of Marcel Breuer in the USA, than to the historicist sentimentality and formal localism of his own country, this meaning that his buildings can be bracketed within the best of the worlds contemporary architectural output. This issue contains two introductory texts by Stan Allen and Horacio Torrent which reflect on Mathias Klotz's architecture within the national and international architectural context, and ends with a short consideration of working conditions and design methods by the architect himself called "About My Work", plus an interview undertaken especially for this number by Hernán Garfias.

2G N.05 - Eduardo Souto de Moura

2G №5 - Eduardo Souto de Moura

OUT OF PRINT
Eduardo Souto de Moura (b. Oporto, 1952) is one of the greatest architects on the contemporary Portuguese scene. A key figure among recent generations of architects in his country, it is he who has assumed the mantle the two great maestros of modern Portuguese architecture: Fernando Tavora and Alvaro Siza.
In 1990 Editorial Gustavo Gili published the first monograph devoted to his work, and the growing interest expressed by the international critical community since then has motivated us to publish this second monographic issue, which complements the first by focussing on the recent, extensive output of the architect. This is a body of work which, without abandoning the standards set by his earlier buildings, attains a delicate maturity. His use of materials and the straightforward and antirhetorical constructional elementality of his latest works sets him apart from the particular stylistic and regional continuity of current Portuguese architecture, bringing him closer to certain positions shared by other European architects, in a critical vision of the limits of what seemed to be understood as a region.
With abundant graphic and photographic documentation, this issue presents 14 works and projects on Portuguese territory, from one-family houses in Tavira and Moledo, various art galleries, to works of wider scope like his remodelling of the Alfandega building in Lisbon and that of the Monastery of Santa Maria do Bouro, near Braga. The issue includes critical essays by Jacques Lucan and Eduard Bru. The "Nexus" section, includes material by the architect himself, the text "Time" and an interview with Xavier Guell.

Jose Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat was born in 1913 and died en Barcelona in 1984. These years delimit his life and work. But the great internal coherence of his thinking, distilled within his architecture, goes beyond these temporal limits, his own idiosyncrasy and the reduced geographical framework where it developed, to provide a reflection on architecture from an ethical standpoint. Although, recognised as the most important catalan architect after World War II, this implicit depth is perhaps one of the reasons his work has not been widely disseminated.

Architecture Et Efficacite Energetique: Basics for Planning and Construction

Architecture Et Efficacite Energetique
Energy-Efficient Architecture: Basics for Planning and Construction,
Roberto Gonzalo, Karl J. Habermann, Yves Minssart,
Birkhauser Basel | 2008 | French edition | ISBN: 3764384514 | 221 pages | PDF | 37,4 MB

How is an energy efficient building created? Which are the most important criteria pertaining to urban development or the conception of the floor plan? What are the optimal dimensions appropriate for the building's usage but also ensuring energy efficiency? Which building elements and systems are most suitable? This book systematically explains all relevant criteria and parameters as regards urban development, design and the subsequent construction of a sustainable building. The immense potential for cutting costs by modernizing the energy systems in old buildings is also demonstrated. Completed projects are presented according to their usage and are analyzed and evaluated in the light of the above criteria. For this purpose extensive plans and technical information are used to illustrate the "energy profile" of each building. This shows the particular importance of planning details carefully. An annotated subject index concludes the volume.
